Avatar arrives in theatres on December 18, 2009. The movie is a 3D experience that the director, James Cameron (of Titanic and Terminator fame), hopes will totally change the movie-watching experience. This movie has been in the works for over 14 years and in production for over 4 years. James Cameron is very passionate about this film. The movie-going audience probably got their first look at this movie when the teaser trailer was released August 20, 2009. On August 21, 2009, about 16 minutes of the movie was shown as a special preview in participating 3D Imax theatres. The whole process for getting tickets for that special preview was pretty bad. I could never get through the website to actually get one. Our own Angela saw it and thought it was pretty fantastic. So I do have high hopes that this will be a pretty good movie, but I hope it does not fall prey to all of the hype that the movie is getting. We all know James Cameron is his own biggest fan.
The teaser trailer gives us a pretty good idea of what the storyline is about. This is obviously taking place in the future. We see a man who is paralyzed from the waist down travel to another planet. Humans cannot breathe the air on this planet which we can see from the oxygen masks on the humans when they are outside. We see the first Avatar being in a tube. The beings are alot larger than humans, blue with stripes, and pointy ears. We can see this man is somehow placed into the mind of the being, and he is now able to control all aspects of the being’s body. The man is transported to the planet’s tropical forest surface where he encounters the first of many different life forms. Then, is that a girl being? Yes. We see rapid shots of the man discovering more of this planet and the war between the humans and the beings. Is there a love story in this film? Yes. Pretty good teaser for this movie although it does not give you any names, places, or much of any dialogue. The music used in the trailer is good also.
The first full trailer for Avatar premiered recently before several movies and has already shown up online. I just watched it for the first time, but I have to start here. They used “My Name is Lincoln” from The Island soundtrack. One of my all-time favorite musical tracks from a movie. It only lasted through part of the trailer. In this trailer, we finally get to hear some dialogue and explanation for what was happening in the teaser trailer. The main character is Jake Sully, a man who was given a second chance to help his country (or is it planet?) by travelling to another planet called Pandora to take part in a special project. This project involves the relocation of the indigenous people of Pandora called the Na’vi so that the humans can mine a mineral worth a lot of money. Of course, the Na’vi are not cooperating. The solution that the humans have come up with is for Jake Sully and the others to remotely control Na’vi hybrids (Avatars) to persuade the Na’vi to relocate. Of course, the plan does not work and a war breaks out between the humans and the Na’vi. You get a pretty good feel of the scope of the movie from this trailer. Also, we get to see some more recognizable actors in this trailer: Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, and Giovanni Ribisi. The trailer is a bit long, but will probably be successful in stirring up interest for the movie over the holidays in December.
And here is an oldie but a goodie from James Cameron.
