The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn News 4/28/10

Well, it’s official and the rumors were correct.  Bill Condon is going to be the director of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.  I will once again bring up my doubt on his skills to direct a movie of this type.  Look at his experience.  He is a great director, and he has the awards to prove it, but  I believe that he has never directed a movie like this.  Feel free to disagree with me.  I may eat my words when the trailer comes out for the movie in probably a year.  STILL no official word on whether Breaking Dawn will be one movie or two.

Here is the official statement from Summit:

“BILL CONDON TO DIRECT SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT’S THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN

Los Angeles, CA April 28, 2010 – Summit Entertainment has confirmed that Academy Award® winner Bill Condon will direct THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, based on the fourth novel in author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, is currently being written by Melissa Rosenberg, and will star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Wyck Godfrey, Karen Rosenfelt, and Stephenie Meyer will produce the project.

“Bringing Stephenie Meyer’s BREAKING DAWN to the screen requires a graceful and intelligent hand and we believe Bill Condon is exactly the right steward, having shown equal and abundant talents of immense creativity and subtle sensitivity,” said Erik Feig, President of Production and Acquisitions, for Summit Entertainment.

Added author Stephenie Meyer, “I’m so thrilled that Bill wants to work with us. I think he’s going to be a great fit, and I’m excited to see what he does with the material.”

“I’m very excited to get the chance to bring the climax of this saga to life on-screen. As fans of the series know, this is a one-of-a-kind book – and we’re hoping to create an equally unique cinematic experience,” said Bill Condon.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN illuminates the secrets and mysteries of this spellbinding romantic epic that has entranced millions.

Condon is well known for writing and directing DREAMGIRLS, KINSEY, and GODS AND MONSTERS, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1999. He was nominated for a second Oscar for his screenplay for the movie musical CHICAGO in 2003. Most recently the multi-hyphenate directed the pilot episode for the Showtime series “The Big C” and produced the 81st Annual Academy Awards telecast, hosted by Hugh Jackman.

The third film in the franchise, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE is due in theaters on June 30, 2010.

Condon is represented by WME and Anonymous Content.

I'm skipping Eclipse and I'll skip Breaking Dawn now too. TWILIGHT was amazing because Catherine Hardwicke directed it. New Moon was awful and the Eclipse trailers look even worse, if that's possible. The wigs and make-up are laughable in Eclipse. I read the books because of TWILIGHT, if I'd seen New Moon first I NEVER would have read the books. I'll have to be content with my TWILIGHT DVD and the books, but the film saga began and ended for me with TWILIGHT. Question: Mr. Condon is a song and dance man, and Gods and Monsters was about a gay man, so he can relate to a teenage girl and vampires because. . . . . . . . ?

Sarah, ITA with your assessment of Condon as a director for BD. The very heart and soul of the Twilight franchise is a young woman’s first love with the ultimate outsider, who happens to be a vampire. It is a woman’s story told from a woman’s point of view. BD especially is all about important female realities, including marriage, pregnancy, birth, and the willigness of a woman to give up her own life so that her baby newborn can live.

I see nothing in Condon’s past work to believe that he will do at least as poorly as Weitz and (apparently) Slade did with their directorial disasters of, respectively, NM and Eclipse.

What a waste. Summit did to the Twilight franchise what Weitz did to Golden Compass.

I would say that if Golden Compass had gotten the go ahead for more movies, it would have been salvaged. Had they actually ended it when it was supposed to, it would have maybe had a better outcome.

I have to disagree with you on Twilight. I thought it was pretty bad compared to New Moon which you can see from my review. Loved it!

Where in the hell are they trying to take this?? Will we have singing vampires and werewolves in the Breaking Dawn? Damn. I like Twilight and New Moon. True facts the wigs were laughable but also. If you looked at Interview with a vampire and Bromstokers Dracula. Its alot laughable wigs and makeup in there too. No one has truly seen a vampire and only can speculate on what hair and skin will look like. But I enjoy the movies. Hopefully we can finish out the series and not laugh at any more shit! Especially the facts. I agree Sarah. But once again will this shit go on Broadway or what?
