For anyone that took one look at the photo introducing this piece and thought “Yum” I say “Right?!?” But Idris Elba isn’t the only thing the BBC One channel has going for it. Nope the fact is that aside from it being a police drama it just happens to be a damn good show. So far, that is. I have only seen the first episode in Series 1 so I am kinda guesstimating that future episode’s will be just as good. Now I could just search through my trusty sites and catch up on Series 1 before the rest get aired on BBC America but I think that tends to ruin the fun. Plus, I am not that big of a fan of watching shows on my computer. It’s fine if I am just wasting time, but for true viewing pleasure it doesn’t hold a candle to the real thing. So no, no I will be watching the BBC series just as most Americans will.
For those of you not familiar with the way a show will run on BBC America, well let me just say that you are in for a treat. Patience is a trait I had to force myself to learn after falling in love with some of their shows. One season or series as they call them can have as many as 20 episodes to as few as 2. Yeah that’s right I said 2 episodes counts as a full season. Don’t ask me why, because I do not know. The sneaky thing is that even though they can be very few and far between I find myself waiting with bated breath for Series 4 of Primeval to air and the last time I saw a new episode of that show was in 2009. And don’t even get me started on Skins.
Luther is a 6 part British crime drama starring Idris Elba (aka Russell “Stringer” Bell from The Wire) as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther who has for lack of a better term, gone round the bend after a dealing with a child killer. The thing that I find that I love about British shows is that even when they follow a familiar formula they still seem fresh to the eyes. Maybe it’s because I have become jaded to American television or maybe I have just seen one too many episodes of television. Who knows? All I know is that when I was watching Luther this evening I didn’t feel as though I had been there, seen that. From the cool tones the show was shot in to the explosively crisp acting Luther is unlike any episode of Law & Order I have ever seen.
