Lost in Previews: Water for Elephants

This is the trailer for the film adaptation of Sara Gruen’s popular novel Water for Elephants.  This film and the trailer has been long awaited by fans of the book which spent two years on the bestseller list.  I personally have not read the book yet.  I have issues with circuses and the use of performing animals.  I was concerned when news of the movie first came about because of the use of performing animals.  It is hard to say if these animals lead a good life.  I am sure people could argue the same for zoos (I am a zookeeper).  In another corner are the Twihards and Robert Pattinson fans that have also been waiting for the movie since Pattinson plays the main character Jacob.  This will be Pattinson’s second (post-Twilight) attempt at an acting career outside of Twilight.  Reese Witherspoon plays the love interest, Marlena, and Christoph Waltz plays the bad guy, August.  There is indeed an elephant in this movie.  In real life, she is an Asian elephant who is named Tai.  James Frain plays her caretaker in the movie.  Hal Holbrook plays older Jacob.  Francis Lawrence directs the adaptation.  He most recently directed Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” video.  Official Synopsis:

Based on the acclaimed bestseller, WATER FOR ELEPHANTS presents an unexpected romance in a uniquely compelling setting. Veterinary school student Jacob meets and falls in love with Marlena, a star performer in a circus of a bygone era. They discover beauty amidst the world of the Big Top, and come together through their compassion for a special elephant. Against all odds — including the wrath of Marlena’s charismatic but dangerous husband, August — Jacob and Marlena find lifelong love.

I love the music in the trailer.  I wonder if composer James Newton Howard did this track as well.

Water for Elephants is in theatres April 15, 2011.
