This is the second trailer for the film adaptation of Sara Gruen’s popular novel Water for Elephants. I have officially started reading the book, but have not gotten that far yet. I have issues with circuses and the use of performing animals. I was concerned when news of the movie first came about because of the use of performing animals. It is hard to say if these animals lead a good life. I am sure people could argue the same for zoos (I am a zookeeper). In another corner are the Twihards and Robert Pattinson fans that have also been waiting for the movie since Pattinson plays the main character Jacob. This will be Pattinson’s second (post-Twilight) attempt at an acting career outside of Twilight. Reese Witherspoon plays the love interest, Marlena, and Christoph Waltz plays the bad guy, August. There is indeed an elephant in this movie. In real life, she is an Asian elephant who is named Tai. James Frain plays her caretaker in the movie. Hal Holbrook plays older Jacob. Francis Lawrence directs the adaptation. He most recently directed Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” video.
The trailer shows a lot more of the movie. Just from the first few chapters I have read, the film looks to accurately depict the beginning of the book. This trailer is not as beautiful as the international trailer, but I think it gives us more of the movie. This will probably be the last trailer, other than TV spots, we will see before the movie comes to theatres. Official Synopsis:
Based on the acclaimed bestseller, WATER FOR ELEPHANTS presents an unexpected romance in a uniquely compelling setting. Veterinary school student Jacob meets and falls in love with Marlena, a star performer in a circus of a bygone era. They discover beauty amidst the world of the Big Top, and come together through their compassion for a special elephant. Against all odds — including the wrath of Marlena’s charismatic but dangerous husband, August — Jacob and Marlena find lifelong love.
