First off, Fat Kid Rules the World was one of my favorite films from SXSW 2012. I was able to be at the world premiere of the film and talk with the cast, director, and author of the book. In speaking with director Matthew Lillard, he voiced that he was looking for the right distribution company for the film, not just any company that was willing to take the film. He very much believes in the film and its message. Because of this, Matthew has started a Kickstarter campaign to take the film to the masses. Specifically, Matthew is taking the film on the Vans Warped Tour. That is 42 cities in 55 days. This is a great audience who will really appreciate and like the film. Below is the statement from Matthew on Kickstarter explaining his use of the website:
“Mainstream Hollywood doesn’t know how to make money on a movie like this, they don’t believe that there is an audience, and we mean to prove them wrong. Maybe they’re scared. Maybe they’re just too accustomed to making movies for Biff and Buffy and all the kids who want to be like them. This is NOT that movie. This is a movie for the people who don’t fit into a pretty little box. We plan to bring FAT KID to a theater near you and show the world that you don’t have to make movies about the “perfect people” to find box office success.
Please support our campaign to raise funds to enable us to distribute FAT KID RULES THE WORLD in select markets across the United States.”
The Kickstarter campaign has a lot of truly awesome stuff to offer supporters who can back the film with as little as $1 and up to $10,000 or more. The option that made me laugh the most is the $200 level which will provide you with a custom voicemail recording of Matthew Lillard doing his Shaggy voice from Scooby Doo. If you love Pearl Jam and Mike McCready, you will probably be very interested in a few of the options as well.
The goal of the Kickstarter is $150,000. Let’s make this happen!
