The first trailer for Les Miserables has been released today. The film does not open until December, but with all of the summer blockbusters starting to come out, it makes sense to maximize the promotional opportunities for a film with a later release date. The last time Les Miserables had a film version made of it, it was not a musical film. The 1998 film starred Uma Thurman, Claire Danes, Geoffrey Rush, and Liam Neeson in a film based on the novel. This 2012 version is indeed a musical which is clearly evident in this trailer. No one is going to go into the film not knowing it has singing based on this trailer. The film is directed by Tom Hooper who directed The King’s Speech last. The cast includes Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, and Samantha Barks.
I really dig this trailer and Anne Hathaway singing “I Dreamed a Dream” is pretty damn good. And that is not a wig she is wearing. She cut her hair like that for the role. Kind of reminds me of Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta. I am also questioning why Eddie Redmayne was not given any credit in this trailer. He is a pretty well-known actor at this point.
Les Miserables is in theatres December 14, 2012.
