Moonrise Kingdom Has Already Set a Record

Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom is in a limited release since having its world premiere at Cannes.  On its first weekend, Moonrise Kingdom has set the domestic record for highest per- theatre average for a non-animated film.  The previous record holder was Dreamgirls in 2006.  Over the weekend, Moonrise Kingdom posted an average take of $130,752 at the four theatres and had a total gross of $523,006.  If you include Memorial Day, the gross was $669,486 and a per-theatre average of $167,371.

This boasts well for the wider release.  It opens in Dallas on June 1, 2012.
