Pacific Rim picked up in buzz since San Diego Comic Con 2012 this summer. The first trailer is now here and it looks like a combination of Godzilla, Transformers, The Power Rangers, and Real Steel. I know there has to be other films that can be thrown in that mix. This is Guillermo del Toro’s first time back in the director’s chair since Hellboy II: The Golden Army that came out in 2008. There probably is a large gap because of that short-lived stint as director for The Hobbit, he produces a lot of films, and does write screenplays. The Hobbit Trilogy and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark are his last writing credits.
Pacific Rim boils down to being a monster versus robot movie of epic proportions. Humans are using massive robots to fight back against massive monsters that come from another dimension through a crack in the ocean. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke, and Diego Klattenhoff. Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans) wrote the screenplay.
It should be noted that a sequel to Pacific Rim is already in the works.
“When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.”
Pacific Rim is in theatres July 12, 2013.
