Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 opened up the Sony/Screen Gems block in Hall H. This film is, of course, a sequel to the successful Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs from 2009. The premise of the original film is that food falls from the sky instead of rain, which is the fault of Flint Lockwood. In the sequel, that food that fell from the sky is now taking an animal form.
The panel at San Diego Comic Con included Bill Hader (Flint Lockwood), Anna Faris (Sam Sparks), Terry Crews (Earl Devereaux), Kris Pearn (director), and Cody Cameron (director).
Both Pearn and Cameron worked on the first film as artists, but were not directors. The directors of the first film, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, were busy working on 21 Jump Street.
Bill Hader commented on how you don’t perform with anyone else when you do voice work. It is just you in a booth, screaming in your character’s voice. Anna Faris’ character is a lot more energetic than others, and she said it is about using a different skill set; You are by yourself, you are in not in your character’s environment, and you have to be walked through each scene so you know what is happening.
Terry Crews took over the role of Earl for Mr. T. He was honored to step in for the sequel with his kids telling him to not mess it up. He still wanted to do his own version of Earl, not just an impersonation of Mr. T’s Earl.
The directors discussed the premise for the sequel, the new characters, and the new environments. The foodimals (food animals) are a big focus of the film and will give us some great visuals. They also went through the process of creating the foodimals, from actual fruit with faces carved into or stuck on them to their final look.
We saw two clips from the film. One had Flint gathering up his crew to go and fight/find the foodimals. The other clip showed Flint’s first day a Liv Corp.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is in theatres September 27, 2013.
