In support of his 2011 album, Young Love, Mat Kearney (pronounced “Carney”) has hit the road again for a 2012 tour. I have been a long time fan of Mat’s since his first album came out in 2006. His first single “Nothing Left to Lose” had a video that was in rotation on VH1, and I immediately loved the song. Based off that song alone, I went out and bought the album which is of the same name as the single. What many people may not have known before purchasing the album (like myself) is that Mat does rap in some...

Thursday is the new Friday in Lawrence. At least that’s the case when Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog is headlining a show at the Granada Theater. Fans gathered inside and out for the sold-out show that actually started on time. Purling Hiss, also from Philly played opening set.
Dr. Dog is on tour now, just days before the release of their new record Be The Void, due out February 7. The band has made the entire album available for streaming this week at http://teamcoco.com/drdog
Set List: “That Old Black Hole”,...

The Woman in Black is a horror movie that lends itself more to the classic, spooky tendencies of a nearly forgotten generation of horror cinema. Feeling more akin to Nosferatu than Nightmare on Elm Street, this flick will remind you that the scariest element in any movie has nothing to do with the film and everything to do with your own imagination. Sporting a familiar cast and a decrepit mansion, The Woman in Black has all the right elements to scare you silly and keep you wanting more.
Daniel Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipps,...

Big Miracle follows Adam Carlson (John Krasinski), a charming reporter in Alaska. While covering a few fluff pieces and palling around with the locals in Barrow, he discovers three whales that have become trapped in an ice pack. He immediately shoots a short report on it and sends it back to the main facility in Anchorage. From there the story catches fire, becoming a national sensation and creating the drive to rescue the whales. The whales’ tragic story draws in Adam’s Greenpeace ex-girlfriend, Rachel (Drew Barrymore),...

Josh Trank’s Chronicle is a film about three friends who, at a party, discover some weird ass underground cave full of what looks like giant color changing crystals that give them super powers. If you’re rolling your eyes at that premise, I don’t blame you. The fact of the matter is, YES this is another “found footage” film, but it is SO much better than that. It’s also much darker than you would imagine.
The main character, Andrew (Dane DeHaan) initially buys a camera to document how awful...

This is the third trailer for The Hunger Games which is due out next month, and is expected to be next movie franchise to rise to Twilight levels. I find it odd that they cut a trailer that is only a few seconds over one minute. I would have expected a longer trailer, but there is a chance that this may be a trailer that runs during the Super Bowl. I do not know if Lionsgate would shell out that much cash for a sure thing (Update: It will air during the pre-show, not during the game). In any case, people are super excited...

Pina is a film that is dedicated to choreographer Pina Bausch. Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire, The Buena Vista Social Club) directed the film in collaboration with many people who have been influenced or taught by Pina. This is quite simply a film about modern dance with some new ways of bringing this type of dance to the movie-going audience.
The film is shot in 3D, which is unique because there are few documentaries shot in 3D, and this has to be the only dance film presented in this format. While there are no 3D gags,...

There really isn’t much to say about Lemonheads front man (and sole original member) Evan Dando that has not already been mentioned at some point in the songwriter’s 25+ year career. The word “prolific” can be associated with Dando just as much as the word “junkie,” and though you could condemn the use of the word in respect of the man’s personal life, his habits have been public fodder in his own writing for years. Songs such as “Style” (I don’t wanna get stoned / but...

If there is ever an award given for “Creepiest Wax Statue Impression,” it would surely go to Glenn Close. Playing the title character in Rodrigo Garcia’s Albert Nobbs, she spends a good chunk of the film quietly observing, not moving a muscle, as any good butler in the early 1900′s would do. And that’s what she plays here. A butler working in an Irish Hotel, trying to make a living while passing herself off as a man who secretly hides his earnings in the floorboards of his room, with aspirations...

The film stars Sam Worthington (Avatar, Clash of the Titans) as former cop Nick Cassidy, who is out to clear his name with help from his brother Joey (played by Jamie Bell) and girlfriend Angie (Genesis Rodriguez). He places himself on a ledge and requests to have Lydia Mercer (played by Elizabeth Banks), a police negotiator, work to talk him back in. This only serves as a distraction full of police and onlookers, so that the heist being carried out at the same time may prove successful. The target of this ambitious plan...

Liam Neeson in the past few years has become the actor known for “kicking a** and taking names.” Just look at what he did in Taken and Unknown. The Grey is not a huge departure from those roles, but this time he is going up against some nasty wolves instead of unseemly humans.
The Grey is a survivalist film, pitting man against nature. A plane crashes that contains part of the crew of a plant that is in a remote part of Alaska. They are on their way to Anchorage when something goes amiss and they crash land in the...
