The subject matter of The Ghost Writer may be curiously close to to the life of it’s director, Roman Polanski, but it’s political allegory left me forgetting about Polanski’s recent extradition. Even though the story of a Prime Minister running to another country to escape trial does seem a little close to home.
Minus the Polanski sub-text, The Ghost Writer is about a nameless writer played by Ewan McGregor who has been hired to ghost write the memoirs of the ex Prime-Minister Adam Lang. Lang (Pierce Brosnan)...

Everywhere you go, you are bound to see mixed reviews for Alice In Wonderland. Some will hate it, while others won’t mind it, let me assure you that most people don’t know the story they are talking about.
Let me preface my review by telling you that I have always been a freak about the Alice In Wonderland stories. There are two stories by Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland and a later sequel called Through the Looking Glass and what Alice found there. Tim Burton’s version was a hodge podge grab all from both...

Brooklyn’s Finest follows the story of three police officers in the 65th precinct of the NYPD. Eddie Dugan(Richard Gere) is the 22 year veteran one week out of retirement (hello cliché!). He is being forced to work with young wide-eyed naive rookies that draw his ire. Salvatore “Sal” Procida (Ethan Hawke) is a devout Catholic with a family of four and two more on the way that rely strictly on his officer’s salary to get by. His mold-filled home is causing health issues for his wife and he desperately...

Rated R for some disturbing content involving violence and sexuality.
Could there ever be an explanation for the rise of Nazi Germany? One Austrian film maker puffs out his chest and spoon-feeds us his answer in 144 minutes of a beautiful (though outrageously masochistic) film, The White Ribbon.
Our story begins in an unknown village in northern Germany, 1913. At first, it seems to be a quiet, sleepy place held together by it’s strict authorities. We are introduced to many of the inhabitants, including the baron...

Parody of eighties buddy cop films hits all the right parody notes but like some of it’s jokes, it goes on a bit too long.
If you are a fan of 80’s buddy cop films, Tango & Cash, Lethal Weapon, 48 Hours, and Beverly Hills Cop then Cop Out maybe right up your alley. The entire film is a parody on those popular films from the eighties. It wasn’t immediately obvious to me that this was the case. For some reason I had it in my head that Cop Out, while being a comedy, would at least be a bit serious, like...

Any fear that you had due to Shutter Island’s release date change can be laid to rest because Scorsese knocks this one out of the park. Stepping away from a comfortable genre with ease and while I love his other films, Shutter Island gives him a chance to make a film that stands on it’s own among his other classics and let’s Scorsese make a visual statement.
Shutter Island is the story of Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio), a U.S. Marshal that has been called in to investigate the disappearance of a patient...

I looked at the theatrical trailers posted on iTunes yesterday, and about lost it when I saw that they had a trailer for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It’s a teaser trailer, but can I just say how much I loved the teaser. You learn absolutely nothing from the teaser other than the girl is getting a dragon tattoo and then there is some computer DOS screens. I just think it’s brilliant. I found the trailer posted on Music Box Films youtube page and the comments left by people who watched it were not positive....

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief is Hollywood’s latest tween cash grab that has the built-in audience to actually work. The only problem is that The Lightning Thief may be a direct rip off of the film with a boy that has a lightning bolt scar. So, yes you will see a boy mistreated by a parent that is keeping a secret from him, this boy will go to a school to learn things about his new abilities and yes he will be thought of as the most powerful boy at this school. The only difference here is the context;...

I liked this movie quite a bit when I first saw it in 2003, and it was called Love, Actually. This is nothing but a watered down and Americanized version of the British movie, and it is mired in mediocrity. Just think of this as the ugly stepsister of Love, Actually.
Despite a massive ensemble cast (Jessica Alba, Kathy Bates, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacClaine, Ashton Kutcher, Queen...

The first full trailer for The Last Airbender premiered today online. We have only seen the teaser and the Superbowl spot so far, and those trailers really did not give you a good idea about the movie. With this trailer, we finally get some idea of the story, and we can see some of the actors actually say some lines. There are not really any big name actors in this movie, other than the director/writer (adaptation) M. Night Shyamalan. Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) and Jackson Rathbone (The Twilight Saga) are probably the...

When I first started hearing about Dear John, all I could think about were those poor saps at war receiving the infamous “Dear John” letters that their girlfriends were leaving them to be with someone else. To hear that this was a love story of that same fashion I thought they must be joking. They were not.
One thing that had me looking forward to the story was that writer Nicholas Sparks, of the biggest tear-jerker ever, The Notebook was the writer of this novel. Beware book lovers, I have been told that the movie...
