I am sure that I had the same thoughts as many other people when I heard a film was being made about Marilyn Monroe. She is such an icon that I never thought any actress today could in any way pull off a good portrayal of her. Then I thought maybe the film would be a certain actress’ take on Marilyn, not necessarily a true portrayal of her. Michelle Williams was eventually cast as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn. I remained skeptical. My opinion of the film changed for the better within a matter of minutes...

Bristol-based Aardman Animation has become famous for bringing us classics like the Wallace & Gromit films and Chicken Run. Ditching the stop-motion animations for CGI and 3D technology, Aardman presents Arthur Christmas, an inventive story explaining the answers to all those questions kids have about Santa. While it’s cute and fun, it doesn’t have the charm of their previous films and leaves much to be desired out of a fairly limited plot.
In this British tale, Santa has had to stay on top of the latest technologies...

It has been about a year and a half since The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was in theatres. It was a long time to wait for the fourth movie when The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Eclipse were only about six months apart in release. The anticipation for the next film had died down, only to be revived immediately when the first and second trailers for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 arrived. I managed to get just a little giddy sitting in the movie theatre, just minutes from the start of the film. Then the film began...

Since 2008′s Gran Torino, Clint Eastwood has struggled to bring award worthy films to the screen. 2009′s Invictus was missing that bit of movie magic to make it great and Hereafter was so lost in a convoluted message that it never came up for air. Even after those aforementioned films I still had the hope of greatness when I walked into J. Edgar. Eastwood had swapped Damon for DiCaprio and found a story that screamed Oscar throughout its 137 minute run time. The only thing I felt was holding the film back was its...

“A tale of death, a tale of life”
The last time I saw a Werner Herzog documentary, it was at the South by Southwest Film Festival. I had the pleasure of seeing Cave of Forgotten Dreams which was meant to be seen in 3D. It was absolutely stunning film about a cave that none of us will ever see in our lives. While Herzog inserted some eccentricities into the film, it was a marvel to see.
Into the Abyss is Herzog’s latest documentary. I did not hear of it until recently, and the title does not give away what the subject...

After seeing this film and last year’s Winter’s Bone one thing is for sure: John Hawkes is one scary dude. Martha Marcy May Marlene is a long title for a simple storyline. Martha is a young woman who found herself in a backwoods cult of sorts and the story comes in when she is ready to leave this not so humble abode. The events that lead to her decision to leave are sprinkled throughout the film as flash backs of horror. We find Martha, or Marcy May as she is called in her cult family, running from the house in the...

Anonymous brings a very speculated upon issue to light, although this particular mystery will never really be put to rest. The authenticity of William Shakespeare can be questioned, but his name is still carved into history as the greatest writer to have lived. Whether or not any of these theories are true, Anonymous tells a very different story of William Shakespeare.
The story begins in modern-day, following an older man headed towards a theater. The play that night? Anonymous. So, the older gentleman turns out to be the narrator,...

I’ve always thought I had a bit of a punk rock mentality. Though I have a job and pay my bills I felt that the little bit of trouble I could stir up on the weekend could keep me in the game. That was until I saw Dragonslayer, and no not the 1981 Disney classic either. What I learned from the tag- along documentary by Tristan Patterson is that being a chaos hobbyist is nowhere near what it takes to live that punk rock lifestyle.
Dragonslayer follows the life of Pro Skater Josh “Skreech” Sandoval, but not during...

There really is something special about dick and fart jokes, isn’t there? Done properly, they allow for mindless entertainment and nights full of side stitches from laughing so hard you scare the cat. I mean, in a media full of awful ideas and recycled trash, why not go with a format that is ticket sale gold time and time again? I mean, hell, Kevin Smith and his View Askew Productions has managed to make an entire career out of them. And if you think about it logically, Harold and Kumar really don’t stray too far...

Sometimes movies need to be quiet in order to be heard. Take Shelter is such a movie, favoring eerie scenes to epic explosions and quiet revelations to glaring conclusions. This Hitchcock-esque film will have you on the edge of your seat and lost in dreams of pre-apocalyptic proportions without having to bribe you with CGI and 3D gimmicks. This is one quiet thriller you don’t want to miss.
Noah’s story wasn’t just about building an ark or loading the animals in by twos. He was firstly a man given visions...
