In support of his 2011 album, Young Love, Mat Kearney (pronounced “Carney”) has hit the road again for a 2012 tour. I have been a long time fan of Mat’s since his first album came out in 2006. His first single “Nothing Left to Lose” had a video that was in rotation on VH1, and I immediately loved the song. Based off that song alone, I went out and bought the album which is of the same name as the single. What many people may not have known before purchasing the album (like myself) is that Mat does rap in some...

Thursday is the new Friday in Lawrence. At least that’s the case when Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog is headlining a show at the Granada Theater. Fans gathered inside and out for the sold-out show that actually started on time. Purling Hiss, also from Philly played opening set.
Dr. Dog is on tour now, just days before the release of their new record Be The Void, due out February 7. The band has made the entire album available for streaming this week at http://teamcoco.com/drdog
Set List: “That Old Black Hole”,...

Saturday night at the RecordBar one could find a motley crew of Kansas City music lovers, listeners, and performers. It was not just another bill of local bands on this night, but a celebration honoring local radio personality Michael Byars’ 50th birthday. Byars, an announcer and coordinator for NPR satellite station KCUR, also runs local music podcast The Mailbox, with frequent contributor and music guru Chris Haghirian. The guest of honor seemed to be in good company, as the whole of the venue was filled with people in...

There really isn’t much to say about Lemonheads front man (and sole original member) Evan Dando that has not already been mentioned at some point in the songwriter’s 25+ year career. The word “prolific” can be associated with Dando just as much as the word “junkie,” and though you could condemn the use of the word in respect of the man’s personal life, his habits have been public fodder in his own writing for years. Songs such as “Style” (I don’t wanna get stoned / but...

Awolnation returned to Kansas City on Sunday night, but this time it wasn’t under the banner of a radio call sign. Having seen Awolnation countless times in a wide array of atmospheres, I’m shocked that the band still has the ability to surprise me. This time around you could feel the energy in the air even before singer Aaron Bruno took the stage.
The crowd that filled the capacity club was just waiting for the first lyric of “People” to explode. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen...

Before arriving at The Midland I have to admit I was a little weary about what I was about to see. Though I have thoroughly enjoyed The Kills’ entire catalog, I had yet to see a performance from the duo that was more than satisfying. For The Kills it turns out that the third time is the charm, but before I go any further there were two other bands on the bill that are definitely worth a mention. For this show was like a buffet of musical needs!
Hunters maybe a difficult band to track down on the internet, but...

I’ll be honest. I’ve never actually heard of The Civil Wars. That definitely puts me in the minority though, as last night’s show at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, KS was Sold Out. Just in case you’re like me, living under a rock, a quick Google search shows that singer-songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White met in 2008 in their hometown of Nashville. Sparks flew, thus creating The Civil Wars project. Within a couple of years, the band was playing The Tonight Show multiple times and opening for Adele....

Here at Lost in Reviews, we have been hard at work compiling a list of what has had our ears all year long. After putting the whole thing together, some similarities were occurring. The Kanrocksas show was a huge hit with all of us here as nearly every one of us picked one or more sets from the two day inaugural festival. As for best albums, many of us can’t stop listening to M83′s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming and St. Vincent’s Strange Mercy. It was so much fun looking back on the best of 2011 but we can’t...

While Florence and The Machine tore down the roof on night one it wasn’t long before night two was under way. This night would be more of the typical fare that 965 The Buzz offers with it wide array of concerts as they yet again brought in a 90′s alt icon in 311. While I’ve heard and taken part in my fair share of complaining about The Buzz’s choices for marquee top billing, it’s hard to argue when it comes to filling up an auditorium the size of the Midland. Now with two sold out shows under...

The Midland was an amazing center of gravity last night as the sold out The Night the Buzz Stole Xmas show filled the auditorium with hordes of ladies with their girlfriends in toe and boyfriends (most likely dragged along). The atmosphere started off reposed and gradually grew to a state of frenzied ecstasy when Florence took the stage. She opened with “Only If For A Night” the opening track off her sophomore album Ceremonials. The song was on target as most have never spent an evening with Florence Welch and might...

It was hard not to notice how different the Record Bar felt on Tuesday night. Playing host to to seasoned Power Poppers Mates of State, the Westport Bar’s crowd was notably younger, filled girls in their late teens. A venue that typically hosts a mix of hipsters and quiet guys in their twenties, The Record Bar felt like a different place entirely, with the bright houselights on and a large, potentially sold-out crowd full of friendly, enthusiastic conversation between sets.
But then again, Mates of State aren’t your...

I was beyond excited to have snagged a red carpet spot for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 Fan Event for Dallas, Texas. I have always been a devout Twihard since I read the books. Kansas City did not have many opportunities to do anything interview-wise for any of the Twilight Saga films. I think I bothered the PR rep here enough that she kindly let me have a spot for this event. It was like some kind dream come true (for me).
We were able to interview Jackson Rathbone (Jasper), Nikki Reed (Rosalie), Ashley...

SXSW 2012 is 113 days away. We’ve already shared the first wave of bands announced for the 2012 edition of the festival and just this week the second wave of bands have been announced. This second round doesn’t contain any name’s I’ve noticed before, though this shouldn’t be a surprise for music fans as SXSW is where music fans go to discover the next big thing. Case in point? Foster the People, the band behind that song about the “pumped up kicks” played SXSW 2011. Perhaps one of the...
